Nirmana was founded in 1988 to provide logistic support to the National Campaign Committee – Construction Labour (NCC–CL) whose active campaign since 1985 has resulted in the enactment of two comprehensive central legislations for construction workers in 1996. Today, construction workers comprise a workforce of approximately 100 million out of an estimated 560 million unorganized sector workers.
We have been working for the rights of India’s poor, working and unorganized labour force for the last three decades. We envision an inclusive India where unorganized sector workers are empowered to achieve social security and dignified livelihoods. We are among the few economic justice organisations in India that addresses the entire continuum of Advocacy–to–Access (A2A) for unorganized sector workers wherein the primary focus groups are construction workers and domestic workers.
